We continue to reflect and remember civil rights leaders to honor their bravery and legacies. Today we reflect on Frederick Douglass, who escaped slavery and became a leader in the abolitionist movement. The abolitionist movement was an organized effort to end the practice of slavery. He continued to be an advocate for African American rights. We honor his legacy of equality among all.

As Black History Month continues, today we reflect on Jackie Robinson who became the first African American player in Major League Baseball. He broke the color barrier in a sport by fighting for what he believed in, equal opportunity for all. After retiring from baseball in 1957, he became a civil rights activist alongside Martin Luther King Jr. His courageous efforts played a major role in history, both on the field and throughout American society.

Yesterday evening’s Governing Board Meeting took place at Joseph Zito Elementary School. Principal, Ms. Laura Couret de Gentile presented the school events, parent classes, and the steps Zito is taking towards proficiency. Zito Staff showcased a great opportunity that was presented to their school, which allowed students to participate in STEAM activities and a visit from Larry Fitzgerald. The Governing Board Meeting was followed by a strategic plan update where various departments showcased student data, parent education, communication efforts, and ongoing renovation projects.

Joseph Zito Elementary received a special visit yesterday from Larry Fitzgerald and James Bernstrom, Head of Microsoft Sports Marketing. STEAM Partner, 4th Family also joined the students by providing a fun-filled STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) day to demonstrate tools the NFL uses for their players while building STEAM awareness. Today we reflect on Rosa Parks, a Civil Rights Activist who refused to give up her seat on a public bus because of her race. She helped organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955 to stand up for what she believed in. The boycott lasted 381 days and the 13-month long protest ended with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public buses is unconstitutional. Her bravery led to nationwide efforts to end racial segregations of public facilities.

Black History Month is a time of remembrance and reflection of civil rights leaders and their legacies. Today we reflect on Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of addressing social problems through collective actions. He was best known for his “I Have a Dream” Speech in 1963. He believed that one day, our nation would not judge people by the color of their skin and that all people were created equal. We continue to honor his contributions for a better future.
