Tonight’s Governing Board Meeting was held at Mitchell Elementary School. Principal, Mr. Adam Sharp presented school wide initiatives, attendance and academic goals, after school programs followed by musical and dancing performances. Mr. Baca's third grade chorus sang a message about kindness, students from the drum club played for our families and Ms. Carrillo's Ballet Folklorico dancers engaged our Board Members in a dance! It was great to see a full house of proud parents/guardians, family members, and dedicated staff members in attendance.

We continue to reflect on Black History Month and remember Booker T. Washington as an influential African American speaker of his time. He attended the Hampton Institute and later became a teacher after the Civil War. He founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama. His work in the education field helped African Americans gain hope for acceptance and respect within the nation.

Today we remember Harriet Tubman, an escaped enslaved woman who helped others gain their freedom as a “conductor” of the Underground Railroad. She led people to freedom and participated in anti-slavery efforts. Her life’s work still serves as an inspiration for people from every race and background.

We continue to reflect and remember civil rights leaders to honor their bravery and legacies. Today we reflect on Frederick Douglass, who escaped slavery and became a leader in the abolitionist movement. The abolitionist movement was an organized effort to end the practice of slavery. He continued to be an advocate for African American rights. We honor his legacy of equality among all.

As Black History Month continues, today we reflect on Jackie Robinson who became the first African American player in Major League Baseball. He broke the color barrier in a sport by fighting for what he believed in, equal opportunity for all. After retiring from baseball in 1957, he became a civil rights activist alongside Martin Luther King Jr. His courageous efforts played a major role in history, both on the field and throughout American society.
