During Hispanic Heritage Month, it is important for us to highlight the life and work of Jaime Escalante, an accomplished educator who had a profound impact on the field of education. Originally from Bolivia, Escalante was a mathematics teacher at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles. Here is where he transformed the lives of students, many of whom came from underprivileged backgrounds and faced significant educational challenges. Despite these challenges, he was able to help them to achieve remarkable success. However, his achievements were frequently met with skepticism. Nevertheless, his remarkable story went on to inspire the 1988 film, ‘Stand and Deliver’.

Today we reflect on the contributions of Isabel Allende, award-winning Chilean writer. Her work began in 1982 as she wrote novels and a collection of stories. Allende explored the ideas of magic realism, fantasies, as well as non-fiction work. She is considered as one of the first internationally successful female Latin American authors as her books have been translated in 30 languages across the globe.
